MEPPI Receives Contract to Develop Instrumentation & Controls Systems for Holtec International

The Instrumentation and Control Systems will be integrated into Holtec’s SMR -160 Small Modular Reactor

WARRENDALE, Pennsylvania – MARCH 24, 2022 – Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc., (MEPPI) has received a contract from Holtec International (Holtec) to expedite the design engineering of the digital instrumentation and control systems (I&C) for Holtec International’s SMR-160 small modular reactor.

Inherent safety and simplicity have been the core design objectives of the SMR-160 resulting in this modern system for power generation that provides safety and security of the public and the environment during postulated design basis accidents, under extreme environmental phenomena, or adverse human activity, with capital and operating costs greatly improved relative to the current generation of commercial nuclear power plants.

Holtec selected Mitsubishi Electric’s MELTAC® Digital I&C Platform for the SMR-160 design based on the company’s long experience with nuclear power plant controls. In conjunction with Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, MEPPI and Holtec began developing preliminary designs for the SMR-160’s I&C systems under an initial agreement a few years ago.

Holtec has initiated the licensing process for the SMR-160 with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. In addition, the SMR-160 has completed Phase 1 of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) “Pre-Licensing Review of a Vendor’s Reactor Design.” In December 2020, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) awarded Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program (ARDP) funding to Holtec to support the SMR-160’s commercialization readiness.
